We are committed at doing more with less, by striving for efficient training with effective methods, to deliver consistently high performing results. With A Division in our sights, we train with a mindset guided by focused training that screams quality over quantity.

Our long term goals include:

  • Top 10 Premier Mixed Team in Canada
  • Sending 4-5 Vipers to represent at the national team tryouts
  • Being recognized in Canada as the best performing team with only twice a week practices.

Training

Afterburn

The Water Vipers are proudly sponsored by Afterburn, a one-of-kind facility that's redefining the dragon boat experience in Toronto. The gym boasts of GTA's only indoor dragon boat pool and a 2000 sq. ft. strength and conditioning space.

The Water Vipers and Afterburn share similar values, in that both entities work effectively, efficiently and sustainably. We also happen to share the same founder, capitano Andrew Liew.

Paddling Coach:Daniel Hayek

Daniel is our paddling clinic coach. Daniel has been paddling dragon boat for 8 years and competed in the Club Crew championships in Macau and Hong Kong, and represented Canada in Hungary with the Canadian National Premier team in 2013. He is a world champion paddler and a 4 time world medallist. Formerly a paddler for Slipstream, he currently paddles with NDRC, one of the top dragon boat teams in Canada. Danny's diverse experience has exposed him to many coaches, learn many different coaching styles and subsequently allowing him to approach dragon boat from multiple perspectives. Danny is an Engineer by trade and has the ability to explain how various aspects of the stroke contribute to boat speed and efficiency. He is very analytical and enjoys teaching new paddlers as well as fine tuning experienced ones. Passionate about dragon boat, Daniel has been a volunteer co-coach for several years, and has also been coaching his own teams out of Sunnyside Paddling Club.

Strength and Conditioning Coach:Khanh Vy

Our land training is taught by Strength Coach Khanh Vy. Khanh is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach with the NSCA as well as a Certified Athletic Therapist with the CATA. He brings performance and injury prevention tactics to address the demands of Dragon boating. As a paddler himself, he understands the sport through and through. Some of the teams he's worked with include Slipstream, NDRC, The Water Vipers and York Seawolves.

Team Captain:Andrew Liew

Andrew is the owner of Afterburn. He leads bootcamp classes and coaches his dragon boat team, the Water Vipers, on land and on-water training. He believes each person is unique in motivation, skills and abilities and tailors his coaching style to best meet the needs of the individual. Andrew's training focuses on balancing agility, power and endurance to stay well-rounded and fit for life. From 9 to 5, Andrew is a risk management professional at a major financial institution. All other times, he is a dragon boat and fitness enthusiast.

Co-Captain:Gilbert Lam

Meet Gilbert Lam, co-captain of the Water Vipers and the man behind the team's operational needs. As a seasoned paddler, he provides perspective, advice and leadership to his teammates. When he's not crunching numbers at Universal Music Canada, he's crushing the paddling erg machines at Afterburn Fitness. Beyond his passion for this sport, he loves pushing everyone on this team to get stronger and better together.

Water Practice

As soon as the boats are out and the water is safe enough, you will find us twice a week at the Outer Harbour Dragon Boat Club for water practices.

During the winter season, the Water Vipers train at Afterburn Fitness in the East end of Toronto. The unique facility provides us the ability to train with all the weights our heart desires and all the erg/paddle pool time one requires.

Do you have what it takes to be a Viper? We're now recruiting for the 2016 season! We are looking for experienced paddlers and/or fitness lovers who aren't afraid of too much spunk.

The 2016 season officially begins in January! The first land training will be held on Jan 10th, 2016 from 10:30 - 12:30.

Eager to show us what you can do on and off water? Fit Tests are scheduled for Feb 13 and April 23. For those who do not continue with the rest of the season after tryouts, the unused portion of fees will be returned.

Fitness Development for Non-Roster Members

The Water Vipers is a team that embraces inclusiveness, fitness and development. We allow all members to train with us even if you do not make it onto our 2016 roster. For those who are purely interested in working out with our team or in developing your paddling technique, let us know by e-mail or Facebook!
